In the Garda Colli Mantovani DOC wines (an area that includes Volta Mantovana), “Cabernet” is recognized as a type of wine with a denomination: to be labeled Cabernet, the majority of the grapes must be Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Cabernet Franc.

In the Alto Mantovano area, including the municipality of Volta Mantovana, Cabernet is not a historic native grape variety but an international variety introduced more recently. This spread has led to its presence in the morainic hillside vineyards around Lake Garda and the Alto Mincio, where today it contributes to the production of quality red wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc that probably occurred in the 17th century, and is today among the most famous and cultivated red grape varieties in the world, appreciated for its structure, tannins and longevity.
